Club History

Portumna GAA club was founded in 1884. The first mention of Portumna in terms of Gaelic games comes in 1888 with regard to a junior Gaelic football game against Eyrecourt. The first county championship won by the club was the Junior crown in 1914. The first Minor 'A' title won by the club was in 1948. Three more titles were added in 1990, 1991, and 1999, and a Minor 'B' title in 1998. This was due to the formation of a solid juvenile structure which brought many juvenile titles to the club in the eighties.

Portumna won it's second Junior 'A' title in 1982 and added an intermediate title ten years later in 1992. The club remained in the background of senior club hurling until 1995 when Portumna contested their first county final. Victory on that occasion went to Sarsfield's The winning of this title paved the way for our first-ever senior title in 2003. The 2000s saw a golden age for the club as it contested seven consecutive county finals between 2003 and 2009. Victory was achieved in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The club went from strength to strength after this adding another three county titles in 2005, 2007, and 2008. On all occasions the Connacht title was added to the county crowns.

The club won the Galway Senior League in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. The greatest day in our long and proud history came on St. Patrick's Day in 2006 when we won our first-ever All-Ireland Senior Club title. We added our second title in 2008 and our third in 2009, with the fourth coming in 2014 versus Mt Leinster Rangers. Our  U21 team won the 'B' title in January last giving us three titles (1984, 1990 and 2009). Our Junior 'C' team won the county title last year for the first time in the club's history. The club has also been awarded the "Best Club Under the Sun" sponsored by Etihad Airlines.

Portumna GAA Club are indebted to Al and Noreen Hayes of Al Hayes Motors, our club's main sponsor, for their continued financial support and to everyone who has supported the club down through the years.
