25 years ago Portumna minor Hurlers put two minor titles back to back bridging a 42 year gap which had previously been won in 1948.Under the management of Tommy Mc Clearn Frank Quinn R.I.P.& Sean Canning these men has been part of almost all the Clubs underage success stories since the early 1980's. Captained by Francis Canning Castlegar provided tough opposition for them in the final. But some excellent performances from the late Joe O Meara Davey Canning Damien Coleman & the free taking of Francis Canning as well as an over all team performance contributed to a sweet Portumna Victory.
Greater honour followed in 1991 when they put two hurling titles back to back . 1991 opened on a sad note with the terribly shocking news of the sudden death of 17 year old Joe O Meara who was tragically killed during a storm in a freak road accident on the outskirts of town. His friend and hurling Coach Tommy Mc Clearn had a miraculous escape. Joe would have been a key player on this minor team if it was not for his tragic accident. They began the defence of their county title under the leadership of Damien O Brien and won their group games convincingly to set up a meeting with Turloughmore in the final where Frannie Forde &Cathal Moore ran riot and proved a handful to contain. Portumna were favourites going in to the final but if it were not for the heroics of Padraig Rourke who was the goalkeeper on the day & who saved the day with some excellent saves and some great team performances from Ollie Canning Damien Declan & Enda Coleman & Pierce Treacy it was enough to secure the teams victory on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-5. On Sat 29th October these two minor teams will be honoured. Congratulations & well done to all involved.
